We believe in Nature, People and Roots as our particular inspirors to reach the highest quality.
The way has been and will be made through sustainable environment actions, in order to get the best potential for our grapes using the minimum artificial products.
From the very beginning of the wine project, Quinta do Espinho has had a few beehives.
They are found on the slopes looking on to river Távora. All began as a first experience by André, who managed to put a swarm back into a beehive.
Presently he is in charge of thirty beehives producing high quality pure honey.
The unique Douro terroir allows unique habitat conditions for the bees.
Visiting 10 flowers a minute and flying 40 times a day, they touch 40.000 flowers, in search of nectar and pollen.
The bee is, not only the most important agent for the pollenizing of our vines, but also a wonderful producer of the purest honey, rich in protein, mineral salts and vitamins, so good for man’s health.
It’s incredible to see how 70.000 bees, in just one beehive, work for the community in such a disciplined and organized model.
Each beehive has 1 queen bee, around 400 male honey-bees= drones) and thousands of worker bees.
The queen bee has the most important role, as all the organization and reproduction of the species depend on her.
She is also responsible for egg laying, commanding all the bees. Only the females work=the worker bees.
Males can enter any beehive, to fecund the queen bee and protect the community safety.
